Odds are, you haven’t heard of Maxwell, Nebraska.

Neither had architect David McLay Kidd (DMK) until Dormie Network enlisted him to craft the seventh property. Over the course of two years, DMK meticulously design GrayBull Club in Maxwell, Nebraska into a course that would complement the rugged beauty of the Sandhills. During that time, he became well-acquainted with the Fairfield Inn in North Platte, the closest major town—just 30 minutes from the course, but home to only 22,000 people.

Now, the course is set to fully open for its inaugural full season this May to Dormie Network members and their guests. However, a select few had the opportunity to experience GrayBull in the fall of 2024. One of these few is Jason Lusk, Golfweek's Travel Editor and Creative Director.

In a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Jason played GrayBull with DMK himself, completing 40 holes in one day. Afterward, they sat down for a conversation, where David shared his vision for the course, the unique golf terrain of the Sandhills, and why Maxwell in the Nebraska Sandhills is such a perfect location for the game.

“In the Sandhills of Nebraska, we have the perfect terrain for golf. It’s this deep, silty sand that grows tight, firm turf across rolling sand hills,” says DMK. “It all makes for golf that is extremely dynamic, it’s not one-dimensional.”
