How to Optimize your Drives: Higher launch, lower spin, and increased carry distance

One of the fastest ways to become a better driver is to understand the differences between an iron swing and a driver swing. Irons (and even fairway metals) are meant to be compressed against the ground (at a negative attack angle), reducing the amount of loft on the club at impact. A driver, on the other hand, is meant to be hit up on (at a positive attack angle). This is the reason we tee up the driver and why it starts out with very little loft. Below is a drill that can very easily help you learn to hit up on the golf ball.

Step 1: Setup

Take your normal setup.

Widen your stance to where your feet are slightly wider than shoulder width apart.

Add right lateral bend (bending from your right oblique not tilting your pelvis).

Step 2: Head Cover Drill

Place your driver head cover a grip’s length in front of the golf ball.

Make a few practice swings, feeling that you can hit the tee and swing over the head cover.

After creating that feel, repeat that process hitting the golf ball.

The goal is to miss the head cover each time, increasing the attack angle and swinging up at impact.

By hitting more up on the golf ball, you will notice a much higher launch, lower spin, and an increase in carry distance. It is how a guy like Rory McIlroy, being as small as he is, is one of the longest players on the PGA Tour!
